Power Supply known as "Switching Power Supply" are commonly used.Their name is derived from the type of circuit used to change the voltage.

There are AC DC Switching Power Supply,DC to DC switching power supply and DC-UPS power supply.

If the SMPS has an AC input,then the first stage is to convert the input to DC.This is called rectification.This kind of power supply called AC DC switching power supply;if the SMPS has a DC input,then there are not the first stage to convert the input to DC.This kind of power supply called DC to DC switching power supply;As for the DC-UPS switch mode power supply,the first stage converted the input to DC is also needed,and the PSU can driver the equipments and charge for the battery.
